Pathfinder Searches Keyword Searching Search Problem Glossary
Controlled Vocabulary Search - searching a set of standard vocabulary (terms) to describe topics and ideas. For example, you might get hits by searching capital punishment, but none for death penalty.
Finding Aid - an index, list, timeline, table of contents, map, or other means that organizes the contents of a collection to assist the researcher in finding particular items of interest.
Full-text Search - any word in a document is searchable.
Item Record - the name of the web page that contains descriptive or bibliographic information about an item in the collection.
Keyword - a search that looks at every word in a document.
Primary Source - original works in various media formats such as photographs, drawings, letters, diaries, documents, books, films, posters, play scripts, speeches, songs, sheet music, and first-person accounts that are recorded at the time of an event.
Secondary Source - source created by someone either not present when the event took place or removed by time from the event. Examples of secondary sources include textbooks, journal articles, histories, and encyclopedias.
